SankÎÞëÊÓƵ™s a WPIAL HOFer, too

Upon further review …

Apparently, Beth Swink is the fifth individual with ties to Connellsville to be inducted into the WPIAL Hall of Fame.

I must’ve had a fan’s perceived accuracy of NFL officiating these days when searching the list. (More on this later).

As I scanned the alphabetical listing of WPIAL honorees, I somehow skipped over Tom Sankovich.

The venerable former baseball coach of the Falcons was inducted into the WPIAL hall in 2012.

Swink, Tom Dolde, John Woodruff and Johnny Lujack are the other Connellsville representatives.

— I understand (and appreciate) the thankless task of officiating any athletic contest can be, especially in this day of improved video replay.

One fan’s cry for offensive holding or defensive pass interference, is another’s solid blocking technique or great cover defense.

But, it seems the omission (or commission) these days is egregious.

The NBA, which has some of the greatest athletes in the world, routinely allows violation of the rules that would lead to a chorus of whistles at your basic high school game. Why is it that the better the player, the less likely the rules will be called?

I maintain if it looks like a violation, it probably is. I just wonder when the players caved and stopped playing by the rules.

If you’re a fan of Major League Baseball, umpires are providing compelling reasons to go to a computer to do their job. Again, it’s often subjective, but a pitch in the opposing batter’s box isn’t a strike from any angle.

The NFL has the same issues.

I haven’t watched much college basketball this season, so I’ll reserve judgment on those folks.

— Of course, unless the ranks of amateur referees, officials and umpires are filled, it’ll be a moot point down the road.

— I received a snow shovel for Christmas. I’m sure the recent snow storms are just a happy coincidence and have nothing to do with the gift. (Shovel works fine, though.)

— I went to bed Saturday night thinking the Penguins’ 2-0 lead against the Golden Knights with 20 minutes to go was safe. Guess I thought wrong.

— MLB Spring Training starts in about three weeks. A new team to be frustrated by.
