Ten area wrestlers in contention for TriCADA gold after Day 1
ROGERSVILLE — Ten wrestlers from five local schools are in contention for a championship following Friday’s action in the TriCADA wrestling tournament at West Greene Junior/Senior High School.
Beth-Center and Jefferson-Morgan lead the way with three wrestlers apiece in the semifinals.
The Bulldogs’ trio in the final four is Mason Wright (133), Noah Layhue (172) and Malachi Peak (189). The Rockets’ Brayden Hanning (107), James Dulaney (127) and Landon Heath (285) will take the mat looking to advance to the finals.
Frazier’s duo of Jonah Erdley (152) and Jackson Angelo (172) are in the semifinals.
Albert Gallatin’s Colin Rockwell (215) and Waynesburg Central’s Brock Evans (160) are in line for a championship.
West Greene heavyweight Colin Whyte caught a tough break in his round of 32 match when he was pinned in 33 seconds by Trinity’s Edrick Williams.
Whyte, who entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed and fresh off a seventh-place finish at the Powerade tournament, scored a takedown six seconds into the bout and earned three near-fall points after 14 seconds, but Williams was able to score a reversal and earn the fall.
Whyte responded with pins in 1:20, 2:17 and eight seconds to advance to the third round of consolations.
The Colonials’ Julius Poole (121), Colton Kelley (160), Nick Hillyard (172), Roman Smith (189), Hunter Hillberry (215) and Austin Coddington (285) can wrestle back for a medal.
Brownsville’s Logan Ross (127), Ricky Pontious (145) and Devin Drake (189) are in the third round of consolations.
Laurel Highlands’ Quenten Gouker (145) and Tristen Baker (189) can still place as high as third.
Trinity leads the team standings after Day 1 with 121.5 points. McGuffey is second with 120.5 and Peters Township is third with 104.
