Rockets soar past Maples, improve to 4-0
Houston Guesman had a hand, or leg, in four of Jefferson-MorganÎÞëÊÓƵ™s nine touchdowns in its 62-14 victory over Mapletown in the Class A Tri-County South Conference football opener for both teams at Parker Field on Friday night.
J-M improved to 4-0 this season. The Maples dropped to 1-3.
Guesman ran for 94 yards on 9 carries and scored two touchdowns. He was 3 of 8 for 92 yards with two touchdown passes. The RocketsÎÞëÊÓƵ™ quarterback scored on a 42-yard run with 6:42 left in the first quarter and Logan Yeck converted on the first of eight PATs for a 7-0 lead.
Johnny GilbertÎÞëÊÓƵ™s interception set up Jefferson-MorganÎÞëÊÓƵ™s second score, as Jase Bedillion pulled in a 28-yard touchdown reception from Guesman with 6:12 left in the first quarter for a 14-0 advantage.
Deakyn Dehoet took a jet sweep from Guesman 14 yards into the end zone for a 21-0 lead with four seconds remaining in the first. GuesmanÎÞëÊÓƵ™s 50-yard pass to Ryan Baker set up DehoetÎÞëÊÓƵ™s score.
Dehoet, who has a special teams touchdown in all four games J-M has played this year, returned a kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown with 2:06 left in the fourth.
Johnny Woodward scored on a three-yard run with 3:14 left in the second quarter and Guesman took a keeper for a nine-yard touchdown with 16 seconds left in the first half for a 34-0 lead.
GilbertÎÞëÊÓƵ™s 16-yard run put the mercy rule into effect at 10:52 of the third quarter. Dehoet scored on a 43-yard run with 7:55 remaining in the third.
The RocketsÎÞëÊÓƵ™ Eli Hill returned a fumble 28 yards for a touchdown.
Ashton Walker and Colton Spitznogle scored touchdowns for the Maples. Walker scored on a one-yard run and Spitznogle on a 50-yarder. Brock Evans ran in a two-point conversion. Carson Vanata led the Maples defense with five tackles.
