San Fran, McCaffrey will edge Chiefs

Before I get to my thoughts on Super Bowl LVIII, here’s what the next generations of Downey prognosticators think.

Great-nephew Collin Downey, a middle-school student in the Hempfield Area School District, simply stated, “Kansas City Chiefs, 31-17.”

Nephew Brian Lohr hit the prediction ground running as a Holy Cross School elementary student when he correctly predicted the St. Louis Rams’ victory in Super Bowl XXXIV. Brian is looking to recapture the magic, saying, “I think Brock Purdy will lead SF to victory. He will be the first-ever Mr. Irrelevant to play in a Super Bowl and win MVP. Christian McCaffrey will have two receiving touchdowns from Purdy. Travis Kelce will lose, but still have Taylor Swift to comfort him. 49ers, 27-19.”

As for me, I’m leaning towards a 49ers victory. I’m a defensive wins kinda guy, but, in this case, the team that performs at a greater proficiency on offense will be crowned champion. Both squads have a number of fantastic players on the offensive side, but, I believe Christian McCaffrey is the wild card/difference maker. If McCaffrey manages to finish with 130 yards or more of total offense, San Francisco will join New England and the Steelers as six-time Super Bowl champions. McCaffrey will be the MVP and join his dad Ed as the second father-son duo to win a league title for the same team. (Steve and Zak DeOssie did so with the New York Giants). Prop bet? A “Taylor Swift is here” shot after the National Anthem, but before the opening kickoff. And the winner is … the 49ers, 26-24, and Patrick Mahomes will have the ball with one last opportunity for the win.
