Beth-Center downs Brownsville in section opener
HILLER ëƵ Beth-Center won five out of six matches that were contested and received six forfeits in a 58-3 victory over Brownsville Wednesday night in Class 2A Section 3 action at Brownsville Area High School.
The Bulldogs (1-0, 1-0) won four matches by fall and one by major decision.
Brownsville was hosting its first section dual meet in nearly 20 years.
ëƵNo one said it was going to be easy, and tonight we wrestled a very good Beth-Center team,ëƵ Brownsville coach Martin Vojacek said. ëƵWe have a heck of a lot more to work on to try and establish a culture. Tonight was a difficult night, but hats off to Coach Gary (Welsh) and Beth-Center.
ëƵIt was nice to come out here in front of a home crowd, but we need the mat time. The experience they got on the mat today is invaluable, but I think we are on the right track.ëƵ
The Falcons (0-1, 0-2) won the opening bout at 145 pounds when Ricky Pontious earned a 13-6 decision over Jax Taylor for a 3-0 lead.
Pontious scored four takedowns and an escape for the win.
ëƵJax lost that match, but Pontious is a nice little kid,ëƵ Welsh said. ëƵHeëƵs quick, heëƵs feisty and I think he is going to be fine. Brownsville is a program thatëƵs going to be on the rise.ëƵ
Beth-CenterëƵs Devon Harris scored a reversal and earned a fall in 1:47 at 285. Teammate Alex Medlen won by fall in 2:29 at 114 before Xander Day won his first varsity match with a pin in 18 seconds at 121.
ëƵIëƵm really proud of Xander Day,ëƵ Welsh said. ëƵHe is a kid that we got out of the classroom when we found out we had a hole at that weight class, and he stepped in and filled that for us, so it was nice to see him get his hand raised and have some success.
ëƵOur heavyweight (Harris) kind of weathered a storm, but I think their heavyweight is going to be just fine. I was glad that Devon stayed the course after giving up two takedowns early.ëƵ
The BulldogsëƵ Noah McCollum earned a 12-0 major decision over James Pontious at 127.
ëƵNoah had a little bit of a rough go at the Chartiers-Houston tournament, but he wrestled a lot smarter and stayed in position tonight,ëƵ Welsh said. ëƵI think those guys were a little bit nervous last week and had to get the early jitters out, but overall, I am pretty happy.ëƵ
Beth-CenterëƵs Mason Wright closed the match for his team with a fall in 56 seconds at 133. Wright, a junior, qualified for the state tournament last season.
The BulldogsëƵ Geoffrey Douglas (107), Geno Orlandi (152), Aidan Whisner (160), Noah Layhue (172), Malachi Peak (189) and Homer Headlee (215) received forfeits. There was no match at 139.
Former Beth-Center wrestler Todd Fisher is an assistant coach for the Falcons, and Welsh was glad to see his former wrestler shouting out instructions.
ëƵTodd is one of my favorites of all time, and like a son to me,ëƵ Welsh said. ëƵIt makes my heart full to see him out here sharing what heëƵs learned about the sport and his passion for the sport.
ëƵThis is what we need. I am very proud of him and itëƵs kind of emotional seeing him doing it.ëƵ
