Local roundup: Gates scores 27 as Lady Falcons roll past Carmichaels
Skyler Gates dropped in a game-high 27 points as Brownsville rolled past host Carmichaels, 58-23, in a non-section girls basketball game Wednesday night.
Ava Clark followed with 22 points for Brownsville (7-5) which led 20-6, 32-14 and 51-16 at the quarter breaks.
Avery Voithofer paced the Lady Mikes (1-13) with 11 points.
Uniontown 40, Ringgold 38 – Emily Myers scored 13 points as the Lady Raiders held off the host Lady Rams in a non-section battle.
Uniontown’s defense made a one-point lead hold up and Tessa Nicholson hit one of two free throws in the final seconds to set the final score.
Charley Murtha added seven points for the Lady Raiders (5-9).
Jada Gernot had 15 points for Ringgold (6-7) which also got 13 points from Alayna Macioce.
Upper St. Clair 63, Connellsville 23 – Rylee Kalocay scored 22 points in the first-place Lady Panthers’ Section 2-AAAAAA victory over the visiting Lady Falcons.
Meredith Huzjak and Olivia Terlecki added 10 points apiece for Upper St. Clair (5-0, 11-2).
Maggie Orndorff led the way for Connellsville (0-5, 3-12) with 11 points.
Boys basketball
Latrobe 68, Albert Gallatin 57 – Max Butler scored 23 points and Ian DeCerb followed right behind with 22 as the Wildcats fought off the visiting Colonials in a Section 1-AAAAA clash to remain one game in back of front-running Uniontown.
Latrobe (6-1, 14-1) led 18-12 after the first quarter, 33-31 at halftime and 47-44 after three before finally pulling away with a 21-13 advantage in the final frame.
Shymere Wilson tallied 15 points for Albert Gallatin (2-5, 7-7) which also got 12 points from Mekhi Belt and 11 from Jason Jackson.
Monessen 63, Beth-Center 52 – Rodney Johnson poured in 25 points and for the second night in a row the Greyhounds rode a big fourth quarter to victory.
Monessen (9-4) trailed the visiting Bulldogs 41-28 after three quarters before erupting for 35 points in the fourth to pull out the non-section win. The Greyhounds scored 28 points in the final frame to pull away from Geibel Catholic on Tuesday night.
Devontae Robinson added 14 points for the Greyhounds who also got 12 points from Tyvaughn Kershaw in the win over B-C.
Jason Zellie tallied 23 points and Brayden Hull followed with 14 for Beth-Center (7-7).
Boys wrestling
Belle Vernon 68, Laurel Highlands 6 – The Leopards won six of the seven matches wrestled and picked up six forfeit wins in defeating the visiting Mustangs in a non-section match.
Belle Vernon (3-1) got pins from Vander Raczkowski at 132, Kole Doppelheuer at 152, Eric Adamec at 182 and Elijah Brown at 220. The Leopards’ Deyson Soto won by technical at 138 and Colby Hibner won by decision at 145.
Parker Hoff prevented the shutout for Laurel Highlands (2-2) by recording a pin at 285.
Connellsville 74, Albert Gallatin 0 – The defending WPIAL champion Falcons recorded seven falls in blanking the visiting Colonials in a Section 8-AAA match.
Connellsville’s pins came from Zachary Franks over Alex Kinsley at 114, Jake Lilley over Clayton Bollinger at 133, Kai Vielma over Jordan Toth at 139, Julian Ruggieri over Kage Churby at 145, Cooper Lembo over Nick Hillyard at 172, Nicholas Seese over Roman Smith at 189 and Tyler Gallis over Austin Coddington at 285.
Winning by technical fall for the Falcons (2-0, 4-1) were Luke Lilley over Julius Poole at 127 and Lonzy Vielma over Colton Kelley at 160. Connellsville also got a major decision from Christopher Cook over Jason Myers at 215.
Bentworth 48, Brownsville 21 – The Bearcats won four of the seven matches that were wrestled in defeating the visiting Falcons (0-4, 0-5) in a Section 3-AA match.
Bentworth (3-0, 6-4) got pins from Brian Mathews over Maddox Cooper at 114, Bryce Crowson over Ricky Pontious at 145, Racer Litster over Gage Stewart at 160 and Alex Rusilko over Michael Ulery at 285. There were five forfeits in the match with four going to Bentworth.
Brownsville’s wins came from Cinsiur Douglas by fall over Kayton Bright at 107, Logan Ross by fall over Josh Hancock at 127 and Devin Drake with a 6-3 decision over Abe House at 189.
Jefferson-Morgan 55, Beth-Center 15 – The Rockets rang up five pins in beating the visiting Bulldogs (2-1, 5-7) in a Section 3-AA match.
Winning by fall for Jefferson-Morgan (2-1, 8-3) were Brayden Hanning at 107, Caleb Dulaney at 114, Connor PInchok at 127, Johnny Gilbert at 139 and Tristan Miller at 215. J-M’s Brenton Barnhart won by major decision at 152 and Alex Palko won by decision at 172.
Beth-Center’s points came on pins by Mason Wright at 133 and Malachi Peak at 189 and a decision by Alex Medlen at 121.
Trinity 65, Waynesburg 3 – Trinity (3-0, 5-2) rolled past the visiting Raiders (1-2, 3-7) in a Section 2-AAA match.
The lone points for Waynesburg came from Brock Evans on a 7-0 decision at 172.
McGuffey 65, West Greene 6 – The Highlanders (2-0, 12-4) cruised past the host Pioneers (0-2, 1-8) in a Section 1-AA match.
Colin Whyte accounted for West Greene’s only points with a pin at 285.
Men’s college basketball
California 90, Clarion 74 – Cam Polak scored a game-high 35 points, including eight 3-pointers, in the Vulcans’ PSAC West win over the visiting Golden Eagles.
Donald Whitehead totaled 23 points and eight assists for the Vulcans (5-5, 10-8) who hit 14 3-pointers. Cal led by 20 at halftime.
Cam Kearney scored 10 points for Clarion (3-7, 8-8) which also got 22 points, including six 3-pointers, from Gavin Cote.
Grove City 67, Waynesburg 55 – Chase Yarberough scored 23 points and Mike Christenson contributed 17 as first-place Grove City (9-1, 12-3) toppled the host Yellow Jackets in a PAC game.
Antone Baker led Waynesburg (4-6, 6-9) with 18 points and was followed by Casey Keesee with 11 and P.J. Suggs with 10.
Women’s college basketball
Waynesburg 70, Grove City 61 – Tori Wesolowski led a balanced Yellow Jackets offense with 12 points in a PAC victory over the visiting Wolverines (6-4, 8-7).
Also hitting double figures for Waynesburg (3-7, 8-7) were Clara Paige Miller (11), Mia Henkins (11), Macie Justice (10) and Kalista Friday (10) who also contributed eight assists and seven rebounds.
California 85, Clarion 74 – Talia Gilliard scored 26 points and Iyahnna Williams added 22 in the Vulcans’ PSAC West win over the Golden Eagles.
Sierra Bermudez (11) and Alicia Young also reached double digits for California (5-5, 8-8).
Autumn Taylor had 22 points for Clarion (5-5, 11-6).
