Carmichaels defeats Raiders to keep playoff hopes alive

Carmichaels kept its Section 3-AA playoff hopes alive with a 215-217 victory over visiting Waynesburg Central Wednesday afternoon at Carmichaels Golf Club.

The Mikes (7-4) pulled into a second-place tie with the Raiders (9-3) at 7-3 with two matches remaining.

Connor Lapana led Carmichaels with 40. Nathan Dursa and Jase Zdravecky both shot 41. Eli Hastings (46) and Zach Murphy (47) rounded out the scoring. Aydan Bate’s 48 did not count.

The Raiders’ Rykan Gustafson shared medalist honors with a 40. Chase Phillips (42), Joe Kirsch (44), Dom Benamati (45), and Jarett Tretinik (46) closed the scoring.

McGuffey 214, Jefferson-Morgan 223 – The Highlanders remained undefeated in Section 3-AA play with a road win at Greene County Country Club.

Logan Crowe was low man for McGuffey (10-0, 12-1) with 2-over 38. Joel Sovich and Brody Wagner both shot 42. Josh Rusmisel finished with 44, and Jacob Ealy and Vaughn Fleissner both shot 48.

Urijah Teasdale secured medalist honors for the Rockets (6-5, 7-8) with even-par 36. Clay Wilson also broke 40 with a 38. Brayden Ellsworth (47), Darien Marion (47), and Brendan Wood (52) closed out the scoring. Jack Shaffer’s 55 did not count.

Bentworth 218, Brownsville 284 – The Bearcats handed the visiting Falcons a Section 8-AA loss at Chippewa Golf Course.

Blake Reed secured medalist honors for Bentworth (2-9, 2-11) with 4-over 39. Ross Skerbetz (41), Sam Wade (44), Trent Wolpink (45), and Corbin McMurray (49) rounded out the scoring.

Benjamin Vojacek was the low man for Brownsville with 43. Ava Rohland shot 47.

Ringgold 208, McKeesport 235 – The Rams were tough at home on Rolling Green Golf Course for a Section 2-AAA victory.

Evan Callaway had medalist honors for Ringgold after shooting 36. Brice Kowall finished with 37. Trevor Benson (42), Evan Anderson (44), and Brandon Nguyen (49) also counted in the final score.

Caleb Smith was the low golfer for the Tigers with 40.

Connellsville 206, Albert Gallatin 218 – The Falcons rebounded from Monday’s home loss to Belle Vernon with a solid Section 2-AAA road win at Duck Hollow Golf Club.

Eli Armstrong led the way for Connellsville (8-2, 9-4) with a 4-over 39. Matthew Firestone shot 40 and Ethan Porreca finished with 41. Derek Routzahn (44) and Christian Burd (42) also factored in the final score. Hunter Konieczny’s 46 did not count.

Caeden Williams had the round of the day with a 1-over 36 for the Colonials (4-7, 5-7). Tyler Felio shot 41. Trent Clemmer, Geno Valenti and Paityn Stout all finished with 47. Hayden Metts’ 49 was not used.

Uniontown 213, Laurel Highlands 223 – Trevor Uphold fired a 1-over 36 in the Red Raiders’ Section 2-AAA win at Uniontown Country Club against the rival Mustangs.

Elim Martin shot 39 to keep playoff hopes alive for Uniontown (8-2, 10-4). Brody Schiffbauer carded 45, and Austin Thomas and Colton Mathias both finished with 46. Emily Myers’ 49 was not used.

Kayden Smith was the low man for Laurel Highlands (4-6, 4-7) with 41. Sevi Vecchiolla (42), Tyler Cook (44), Jacob Kalich (48), and Ryan Revak (48) rounded out the scoring. Nico Harim’s 49 did not count.

Mount Pleasant 214, Ligonier Valley 236 – Aydan Gross shot 37 and Ryan Karfelt finished with 39 to lead the Vikings to a Section 2-AA home victory at Norvelt Golf Club.

Tanner Frye (48), Austyn Gross (44), and Darren Kinneer (46) also factored in the final score for Mount Pleasant (8-3, 9-3).

Tyler Jones was the low man for the Rams (6-5).

Charleroi 200, Frazier 226 – Jake Corrin fired a 1-over 37 to lead the Cougars to a Section 8-AA home victory at Mon Valley Country Club.

Gage Patterson broke 40 with a 39 for Charleroi (9-2, 10-3). Kaden Woods and Jackson Keranko both finished with 41, and Levi Large closed the scoring with 42. Ethan Hartley’s 44 did not count.

Eli Cernuska’s 40 was the low score for the Commodores (3-6, 4-7). Dylan Keilbach (41), Tyler Monack (48), Bryce Leachman (51), and Aidan Hardy (46) also counted in the final score. Travis Smith’s 52 was not used.

Girls tennis

Section singles tournaments – The Mount Pleasant duo of Bella Fullman and Ryleigh Drzal will play in the Section 1-AA third-place consolation at Valley High School after both suffered losses in the semifinals.

The winner of the consolation final advances to the WPIAL championship.

Fullman opened the tournament with a 10-0 win over Jeannette’s Paige Richardson and advanced to the semifinals with a 10-3 victory against Greensburg C.C.’s Emilia Longhi.

Drzal started with a 10-2 win against Southmoreland’s Lexi Levandosky and earned a berth in the semifinals by defeating Valley’s Sophia Harclerode, 10-2.

Derry’s Paige King defeated Fullman in the semifinals.Drzal lost to Greensburg C.C.’s Sasha Hoffman in the semifinals.

King defeated Southmoreland’s MacKenzie Gower in the first round, 10-2.

Connellsville’s Aubree McClean started the Section 3-AAA tournament at Franklin Regional with an 11-9 win over Armstrong’s Gianna Dodransky. McClean then suffered a 10-0 loss to Penn-Trafford’s Amelia Williams.

Teammate Maggie Orndorff lost to Kiski Area’s Ella Faybik, 10-2, in the first round.

Girls soccer

Baldwin 2, Connellsville 0 – Baldwin scored one goal in each half for a Section 2-AAAA home win over the Lady Falcons.

Kesley Meyer scored at 9:22 of the first half, and Mary Vargo converted a corner kick with 16:05 to go in the match.

Sara Tinkey kept the game close for Connellsville (0-3, 4-5) with 12 saves. Baldwin keeper Evelyn Johnson preserved the shutout with 12 saves.

Baldwin defeated Connellsville by the same score in the Paul Sasko Kickoff Classic.

South Fayette 4, Laurel Highlands 0 – Emily Sinton scored two goals in the South Fayette’s Section 3-AAA victory.

Mia Deramo and Gabby Beinecke scored one goal apiece.

Belle Vernon 2, Keystone Oaks 0 – The Lady Leopards scored one goal in each half for a Section 1-AA road victory.

Kesley Roskovich assisted on Ava Scalise’s goal in the first half. Chessa Mertz set up Jordyn McDowell’s goal in the second half.

Belle Vernon improves to 3-2 in the section and 4-4 overall.

Waynesburg Central 2, Chartiers-Houston 0 – Peyton Cowell was tough in the nets in the Lady Raiders’ shutout victory in Section 2-A action.

Jaden Tretinik scored an unassisted goal and Kolbi Rastoka converted Emily Rafferty’s pass into a goal.

Bentworth 3, Brownsville 1 – Megan Keturakis, Bella Moyer and Brielle Dillon scored one goal apiece in the Lady Bearcats’ Section 2-A victory.

Madelyn Johns assisted on two goals in the victory. Bentworth improves to 2-0 in the section and 5-0 overall.

Elizabeth McCune scored a goal for the Lady Falcons (0-2-1, 0-5-1).

Mount Pleasant 15, East Allegheny 1 – Morgan Gesinski scored four goals and Rylin Bugosh netted a hat trick in the Lady Vikings’ 4-AA road victory.

Gwen Podolinsky scored two goals and Brooklyn Ulery, Carlee Pfeifer, Maggie Gorinski, Emma Hatcher, Victoria Tepper and Reagan McCormick all scored one goal. Laurel Rummel, Lexie Bake and Samantha Hodge shared goalkeeper duties in the win.

Oakland Catholic 10, Albert Gallatin 0 – Corrina Martella scored three goals to lead Oakland Catholic to a Section 3-AAA victory.

Albert Gallatin goes to 1-2 in the section and 1-4 overall, while Oakland Catholic improves to 1-2 in the section and 2-4 overall.

Southmoreland 3, Yough 2, OT – Aubrey Seder scored the game-winner just before the end of the second overtime period to lift the Lady Scots to a Section 4-AA victory.

Seder finished with two goals and Megan Mehall also scored a goal for Southmoreland (3-0, 5-2). Yough goes to 1-2 in the section and 4-3 overall.

Thomas Jefferson 7, Uniontown 1 – Aislin Majoris finished with three goals in the Lady Jaguars’ Section 3-AAA victory.

Thomas Jefferson improves to 3-0 in the section and 4-1 overall. The Lady Raiders slip to 0-3 in the section and 1-4 overall.
