Southmoreland scored the first 42 points of the game Friday night in a convincing 49-13 non-conference victory at Laurel Highlands.

The Scotties remain undefeated, improving to 3-0 overall. The Mustangs slip to 1-1.

Elliot Premus opened the scoring on a 1-yard power run into the end zone from the wildcat formation at 8:35. Premus set up the play on a long pass reception with his reach to the end zone ruled short of the goal line.

Makel Darnell was all alone in the end zone and quarterback Anthony Smith found him for a 22-yard touchdown with 1:42 remaining in the first quarter.

Darnell then weaved his way through the Mustangs for a 56-yard punt return just 24 seconds into the second quarter.

Smith found Jackson Mickens open for a 6-yard touchdown pass with 1:06 to go in the first half, and then Smith scored with only 1.9 seconds left on a 2-yard run.

Camren Phillips extended the ScottiesÎÞëÊÓƵ™ lead to 42-0 on a 55-yard run at 2:08 in the third quarter.

Smith connected with Mickens on a 12-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter.

Smith completed 12-of-16 passes for 281 yards. Premus had four receptions for 138 yards. Phillips led the Scotties with 69 yards rushing on four carries.

Laurel Highlands scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, both on Noah Lion touchdown passes to Scotty McClay. The first was for 19 yards and the second was a 35-yard completion.

Lion completed 7-of-16 passes for 93 yards. McClay caught four passes for 90 yards.

Jefferson-Morgan 49, Burgettstown 14 ÎÞëÊÓƵ“ Houston Guesman ran for two touchdowns and threw for four more to lead the Rockets to a non-conference home win.

Guesman had touchdown runs of 73 and 20 yards. He connected with Deakyn Dehoet for touchdown passes of 44 and 20 yards and a 78-yarder to Ryan Baker in the second quarter, and found Johnny Gilbert open for a 20-yard scoring pass in the third quarter.

Guesman ran four times for 82 yards and completed 6-of-11 passes for 185 yards.

John Woodward ran for 55 yards and Jeremiah Robertson added 56 yards rushing for Jefferson-Morgan (3-0). Dehoet caught four passes for 79 yards.

Carmichaels 50, Frazier 20 ÎÞëÊÓƵ“ Brandon Yekel scored three touchdowns and set up the final score of the first half in CarmichaelsÎÞëÊÓƵ™ non-conference victory over visiting Frazier.

Yekel took a jet sweep from Cannon Bupka and raced 21 yards into the end zone and Robbie Wilson-Jones made the first of four extra points for a 7-0 lead with 4:26 left in the first quarter.

Wilson-JonesÎÞëÊÓƵ™ interception set up CarmichaelsÎÞëÊÓƵ™ second score, a 52 yarder from Bupka to Yekel on another pass at the line of scrimmage with 2:20 left in the first period.

The Commodores (1-2) cut the deficit to 13-8 on Derek DiamondÎÞëÊÓƵ™s five-yard run. He added the two-point run with 7:58 left before halftime.

Yekel took another jet sweep into the end zone and Will MurrayÎÞëÊÓƵ™s three-yard run gave Carmichaels a 29-14 halftime lead.

Bupka, Murray and Stephen Lewis scored touchdowns in the second half for the Mikes, who improved to 1-0.

Chartiers-Houston 48, Mapletown 12 ÎÞëÊÓƵ“ The Bucs scored the first 13 points of the game and didnÎÞëÊÓƵ™t look back for a non-conference home victory.

Brock EvansÎÞëÊÓƵ™ 18-yard touchdown pass to Colton Spitznogle cut MapletownÎÞëÊÓƵ™s deficit to 13-6 at the 9-minute mark of the second quarter. Chartiers-Houston responded with Aaron WalshÎÞëÊÓƵ™s 62-yard touchdown run just 36 seconds later, his second of the game,

Evans found Ashton Walker for a 4-yard touchdown pass to draw the Maples back, but Walsh scored on an 11-yard run with 1:25 left in the half.

Evans led the Maples with 67 yards on 11 carries and completed 2-of-3 passes for 22 yards.

Walsh ran for 119 yards and threw for 158.

Belle Vernon 23, Central Valley 17 ÎÞëÊÓƵ“ The Leopards outscored the visitors in the second half, 10-3, to rally for a non-conference home win.

Preston RathwayÎÞëÊÓƵ™s 33-yard field goal in the third quarter gave Belle Vernon (1-1) a 16-14 lead.

Anthony CrewsÎÞëÊÓƵ™ 2-yard run and RathwayÎÞëÊÓƵ™s point-after gave the Leopards a 23-14 lead in the fourth quarter. Central ValleyÎÞëÊÓƵ™s Domenic Pratt closed the scoring with a 35-yard field goal.

Curtis Wade scored the opening points for Belle Vernon on a 21-yard run in the first quarter.

Central ValleyÎÞëÊÓƵ™s Jance Henry scored on a 57-yard run in the second quarter, but the LeopardsÎÞëÊÓƵ™ Kole Doppelheuer responded with a 96-yard touchdown return on the ensuing kickoff.

Mount Pleasant 23, Burrell 13 ÎÞëÊÓƵ“ Jarett Garn accounted for 17 points in the VikingsÎÞëÊÓƵ™ non-conference home victory.

Garn scored on a 41-yard run in the first quarter, added the point-after and connected on a 39-yard field goal.

Burrell rallied into the lead in the second quarter, but Mount Pleasant (2-1) regained the lead on Cole ChatfieldÎÞëÊÓƵ™s 42-yard run and GarnÎÞëÊÓƵ™s extra-point.

Garn closed the scoring on a 62-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

Garn carried the ball 11 times for 134 yards.

Waynesburg Central 28, California 18 ÎÞëÊÓƵ“ Jacob Stephenson completed 15-of-26 passes for 169 yards in the RaidersÎÞëÊÓƵ™ non-conference road win at California.

Stephenson threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Jack Ricciuti, and had touchdown runs of 4, 21 and 3 yards. He finished with 94 yards rushing.

Ricciuti rushed for 100 yards on 10 carries for Waynesburg (2-1).

Alan Dennis opened the game for the Trojans (1-2) with a 78-yard kickoff return. Malachi Peak had a 9-yard touchdown run and Lee Qualk sprinted 78 yards to the end zone, both in the fourth quarter. Qualk gained 146 yards on 17 carries.

Monessen 56, Beth-Center 30 ÎÞëÊÓƵ“ The GreyhoundsÎÞëÊÓƵ™ Tyvaughn Kershaw scored four touchdowns, including two in the fourth quarter to thwart a Beth-Center comeback bid, in MonessenÎÞëÊÓƵ™s non-conference road victory.

The Greyhounds (3-0) held a 34-8 halftime lead but the Bulldogs got the margin to 10, 40-30, after DeSean WhipkeyÎÞëÊÓƵ™s five-yard touchdown run and two-point conversion run early in the fourth quarter.

Kershaw put the game away with TD runs of seven yards with 6:51 left and 30 yards with 3:36 left for Monessen, the highest scoring team in the WPIAL.

Kershaw, who rushed for 89 yards on eight carries, also scored on an 11-yard run and a 22-yard pass from Dennis Hawkins.

Hawkins completed seven of 12 passes for 108 yards and two touchdowns.

The GreyhoundsÎÞëÊÓƵ™ Tim Kershaw returned a kickoff 74 yards for a TD.

MonessenÎÞëÊÓƵ™s Rodney Johnson scored three times three different ways, finding the end zone on a one-yard run, a 32-yard interception return and a 34-yard reception.

Four different players put up touchdowns for Beth-Center. In addition to Whipkey, the Bulldogs (0-2) got TD scoring runs of two yards from Santino Revi and 16 yards from Teagan Veatch and Chase Bebout threw a nine-yard touchdown pass to Ben Perkins.

Beth-Center recovered three Monessen fumbles with Enzo Brown pouncing on two loose balls and Veatch accounting for the other.

Whipkey ran the ball 14 times for 82 yards and Veatch had 11 carries for 57 yards.

Fort Cherry 41, West Greene 0 ÎÞëÊÓƵ“ Josh Silveira threw four TD passes and Matt Sieg scored on touchdown runs of two and 37 yards as the Rangers (3-0) blanked the host Pioneers in a non-conference game.

SilveiraÎÞëÊÓƵ™s scoring tosses went 22 yards to Shane Cornali, six yards to Evan Rogers, five yards to Ryan Huey and 13 yards to Braydon Cook. He completed 12 of 17 passes for 218 yards.

Sieg had eight carries for 74 yards.

Jacob Orndoff led West Greene (0-3).with 12 carries for 38 yards.

Ringgold 21, Yough 19 ÎÞëÊÓƵ“ The Rams outscored the Cougars in the fourth quarter, 14-6, for a non-conference road win to snap a 27-game losing streak and give Yough first-year coach Ron Heller is first victory.

YoughÎÞëÊÓƵ™s Raidon Kuroda carried the ball 22 times for 172 yards.

Bentworth 35, Charleroi 28 ÎÞëÊÓƵ“ Ben Hays scored the deciding touchdown midway through the fourth quarter on a 57-yard touchdown run to lift the Bearcats to a non-conference road win.

Hays ran for 142 yards on 12 carries. Ty Watson completed 7-of-17 passes for 135 yards and a touchdown.

The CougarsÎÞëÊÓƵ™ Jackson Keranko completed 15-of-31 passes for 116 yards and two touchdowns. Noah Pletcher caught five passes for 60 yards and a touchdown. He also scored a rushing touchdown.

Girls golf

Belle Vernon 188, Ligonier Valley 202 ÎÞëÊÓƵ“ The Lady Leopards were tough at home on Cedarbrook Golf CourseÎÞëÊÓƵ™s Red course to upset Ligonier Valley for a Section 1-AA home win.

Vittoria Scaramucci led Belle Vernon (3-4, 3-6) with 41. Sydney Stark (45), Hailey Farrah (56), and Felicia Kruppa (46) rounded out the scoring.

Addy Witoski was the low golfer for the Lady Rams (5-2, 6-3).
