Lady Commodores rally past GCC for section-opening win

The Frazier girls volleyball team rallied from two sets down Thursday night for a 3-2 win over visiting Greensburg C.C. in the Section 4-A opener for both teams.

The Lady Centurions won the first two sets, 25-19, 25-15.

Frazier (1-0, 1-2) rallied back to tie the match with set wins of 25-20 and 25-18, and then completed the comeback with a 15-12 win in the fifth set.

Frazier’s Grace Vaughn had a double-double with 10 kills and 14 service points. Gracen Hartman led the offense with 40 assists. Addison Hiles had 16 digs, while Jayanna Ciferno finished with 12. Allie Monack had a team-high 14 kills, and Addison Schultz finished with 10 service points and three blocks.

Thomas Jefferson 3, Albert Gallatin 2 – The Lady Jaguars won the first, third and fifth sets for a Section 3-AAA home victory.

Thomas Jefferson took the first set, 27-25, and the Lady Colonials tied the match with a 25-20 win. The home team regained the lead in the third set, 25-13, only to have Albert Gallatin remain alive with a 25-14 win in the fourth set.

Thomas Jefferson clinched the match with a 15-2 win in the fifth set.

Albert Gallatin’s stats leaders were Baili Chetosky (6 digs), Danica Sterbutzel (6 digs), Leah Myers (7 digs, 1 ace, 14 kills, 3 blocks), Mia Myers (3 digs, 24 assist, 1 ace, 9 kills), Mary Myers (5 digs), and Mya Glisan (3 digs, 12 kills, 2 blocks).

Ringgold 3, Belle Vernon 0 – The Lady Rams swept past visiting Belle Vernon for a Section 3-AAA win.

Ringgold (2-0, 2-1) won by the scores, 25-14, 25-12, 25-16.

Waynesburg Central 3, Bentworth 0 – The Lady Raiders were tough at home for a Section 3-AA victory in straight sets.

Waynesburg )2-0, 3-0) swept to victory by the scores, 25-13, 25-18, 25-14.

Bentworth was led by Chelsea Dindal (3 kills, 4 aces), Nora Lindsey (3 kills), Olivia Telegraphis (10 digs), and Zoie McDonald (8 assists).

Waynesburg Central had contributions from Ani Cree (10 kills, 8 digs, 3 aces, 2 blocks), Emily Rafferty (9 kills), Railey Bochna (6 kills, 4 digs, 5 aces), Bailey Rafferty (7 digs, 19 assists), and Gina Tedrow (7 assists, 4 aces).

Brownsville 3, Washington 0 – The Lady Falcons returned home from Washington County with a Section 3-AA victory.

Brownsville won by the scores, 25-22, 25-22, 25-23.

Brownsville (1-1, 1-3) was led by Payton Evanchak 11( assists, 6 service points, 3 kills), Mia O’Hern (9 service points, 3 aces), Skyler Gates (12 kills, 8 blocks), Ashley Evanchak (15 digs), and Abigayle Thomas (9 service points).Section 4-A

Southmoreland 3, Carmichaels 1 – The Lady Mikes stayed alive by taking the third set, but the home team won the fourth for the victory.

Southmoreland won the first two sets, 25-12 and 25-20. Carmichaels won the third set, 25-16, to stay alive, but the Lady Scots closed out the victory with a 25-14 win in the fourth set.

Southmoreland was led by: Zoey Welling (21 assists, 8 digs, 3 aces), Riley Puckey (14 assists, 4 kills, 4 digs, 4 aces), Taylor Doppelheuer (18 kills, 2 blocks), Makayla Etling (6 kills, 5 digs); Morgan Riddle (4 kills), and Ainsley Martin (32 digs).

Laurel Highlands 3, Elizabeth Forward 0 – Laurel Highlands swept past the Lady Warriors for a Section 3-AAA win.

Laurel Highlands won by the scores, 25-15, 25-7, 25-16.

Laurel Highlands’ stats leaders were Jayna Fabrey (8 digs, 7 aces), Alexandra Mattey (4 digs, 7 kills), Lucy Baker (7 digs, 2 kills), Sara Reed (8 assists, 2 digs, 3 aces), Ayrianna Sumpter (4 kills, 2 blocks), Callie Friend (1 kill, 1 block, 2 digs), Yelena Ford (6 assists, 2 digs, 1 ace), and Diondra Brown (4 digs, 4 kills).

Boys golf

Beth-Center 217, Carmichaels 219 – The Bulldogs upended visiting Carmichaels for a Section 3-AA win at Chippewa Golf Course.

Luke Amon and Parker Amos shared team scoring honors for Beth-Center (2-8, 2-8) with 5-over 40. Karson Keys shot 41. Jordan Lowman (46) and Evan Lowman (50) closed out the scoring.

Zach Murphy was medalist for the Mikes (5-3, 5-4) with 4-over 39. Nathan Dursa (43), Connor Lapana (42), Aydan Bate (48), and Eli Hastings (47) closed out the scoring.

McGuffey 189, Waynesburg Central 189 – First place in Section 3-AA was on the line when the Raiders hosted the Highlanders at Rohanna’s Golf Course, and the match needed a playoff hole to decide the outcome.

McGuffey won the playoff, 17-21, to improve to 8-0 in the section and 12-1 overall. Waynesburg Central slips to 6-2 in the section and 8-2 overall.

The Raiders’ Jarett Tretinik shared medalist honors with 3-over 36. Dom Benamati and Aidan Titus both finished with 37. Joe Kirsch carded 39 and Chase Phillips closed out the scoring with 43.

McGuffey’s Logan Crowe and Brady Wagner both shot 36.

Charleroi 212, Seton-La Salle 229 – The Cougars cruised to a Section 8-AA home victory at Mon Valley Country Club.

Levi Large had medalist honors for Charleroi (7-2, 8-3) with 2-over 38. Gage Patterson, Jake Corrin and Josh Chambers all shot 43. Ethan Hartley closed the scoring with 45.

John Dolan shared medalist honors for Seton-La Salle (3-5, 4-6) with 38.

Belle Vernon 178, Laurel Highlands 200 — Belle Vernon inched closer to securing a Section 2-AAA playoff berth with a victory against visiting Laurel Highlands on the front nine of Cedarbrook Golf Course’s Red course.

Jordan Mocello fired a 2-under 33 to lead the Leopards (9-0, 11-0). Seth Tomalski shot 1-under 34. Donny Croftcheck carded an even-par 35. Jack Edwards and Landon Vaccaro both finished with 38.

Jacob Kalich shared medalist honors with 33 for the Mustangs (3-5, 3-6). Tyler Cook shot 40. Kayden Smith and Sevi Vecchiolla both finished with 42. Ryan Revak’s 43 closed the scoring.

Uniontown 212, Ringgold 240 – The Red Raiders’ kept their Section 2-AAA playoff hopes alive with a win over the visiting Rams.

Uniontown improves to 7-2 in the section and 8-3 overall with section matches remaining against McKeesport, Laurel Highlands, Connellsville and Belle Vernon. Belle Vernon is on the road Monday afternoon against Connellsville. Both the Falcons and Leopards play Albert Gallatin.

Trevor Uphold led the way for the Red Raiders with 39. Brody Schiffbauer shot 40. Austin Thomas and Elim Martin both finished with 44. Colton Mathias rounded out the scoring with 45.

Brice Kowall was the low man for Ringgold (0-9, 0-10) with 44.

Mount Pleasant 187, Southmoreland 228 – The Vikings picked up a Section 2-AA road win at Donegal Highlands Golf Course.

Ryan Karfelt secured medalist honors for Mount Pleasant (6-3, 7-3) with 33. Aydan Gross (35) and Nico Pisula (37) also broke 40. Tanner Frye shot 40 and Darren Kinneer finished with 42.

Brody Chernesky paced the Scotties (0-8, 1-9) with 43. Lucas Ellena finished with 44.

Gateway 220, Connellsville 221 – The starters had the day off in a non-section loss to the Gators at Cloverleaf Golf Course.

Christian Burd led the Falcons (8-3) with 43. Sam Tzan and Connor Cook both shot 44. Nicky Farrell and Mason Miller both finished with 45.

Joey Jurczaky was medalist for Gateway (4-6) with an even-par 37.

Girls golf

Elizabeth Forward 183, Norwin 206 – Mya Morgan had four birdies in the Lady Warriors’ Section 3-AAA home victory at Youghiogheny Country Club.

Morgan fired 1-under 35 in the victory. Sydney Boyd (48), Alizabeth Leezer (49), and Annalise Didjunas (51) also counted in the final score for Elizabeth Forward (7-0, 9-0).

Adalena Robb was the low golfer for the Lady Knights (3-5, 3-8) with 44.

WCCA Championship – Hempfield’s Milana Yannascoli finished with 4-over 41 on the front nine at Champion Lakes Golf Resort to win her first county title.

Belle Vernon’s Victoria Scaramucci finished seventh and teammate Sydney Stark was 10th.

Girls tennis

Mount Pleasant 5, Southmoreland 0 – The Lady Vikings rolled to a Section 1-AA home shutout.

Bella Fullman, Ryleigh Drzal and Kiersten O’Connor won their singles matches. Danica Trainer and Autumn Jurkovic-Kuczma and Ella Alakson and Hannah Shawley completed the sweep in doubles.

Connellsville 3, Gateway 2 – The Lady Falcons won two singles matches and then clinched the Section 1-AAA home match with a win at first doubles.

Maggie Orndorff won her No. 1 singles match and Aubree McClean was victorious at third singles. Jose Knopsnider and Allison Painter won at No. 1 doubles.

Boys soccer

Trinity 0, Ringgold 0 – The Section 2-AAA match ended in a scoreless tie in the defensive battle.

The decision was made not to play overtime because of the lateness of the match and an injury to one of the officials.

Ringgold is 2-0-1 in the section and 3-0-1 overall.

Mount Pleasant 2, Yough 0 – The Vikings scored both goals in the first half for a Section 4-AA home victory.

Aydan Gross scored the first goal on a free kick. Tyler Kurtz added the second goal of the first half.

Brownsville 2, Waynesburg Central 1 – Owen Haught set up Eli Taylor for the Raiders’ lone goal of the Section 4-AA match.

Bentworth 6, Greensburg C.C. 0 – Adam Moessner scored four goals in the first half in the Bearcats’ Section 2-A win over the visiting Centurions.

Ryan Moessner also scored a goal in the first half. Paxton Thomas netted the only goal of the second half.

Aiden McMurray, Dillan Colbert, Andrew Vipperman, Adam Moessner and Ryan Moessner had assists.

Chartiers-Houston 4, California 0 – The Trojans were shut out by Chartiers-Houston in a Section 2-A loss.

Ashton Kennedy scored two goals for the Bucs (1-0, 1-4). California goes to 0-1 in the section and 0-2 overall.

Elizabeth Forward 4, McGuffey 0 – Luca Valerio scored twice to lead the Warriors to a Section 3-AA victory.

Dominic Cavalier and Aidan Davis scored one goal each for Elizabeth Forward (2-0-1, 2-2-1).

Franklin Regional 10, Uniontown 0 – Joey Bayne led the Panthers with four goals in a Section 3-AAA victory.

Uniontown goes to 0-3 in the section and 1-3 overall.

Southmoreland 4, Derry 0 – Hunter Ryan scored a hat trick in the Scotties’ Section 4-AA win over the Trojans.

Christian Cook scored one goal and Trent Nelson held Derry scoreless for Southmoreland (2-1, 2-4).

Thomas Jefferson 2, Albert Gallatin 0 – Brayden Miller and Jake Shoemaker scored one goal apiece for the Jaguars in a Section 2-AAA win.

Albert Gallatin goes to 0-3 in the section.

Upper St. Clair 3, Connellsville 0 – The visiting Panthers returned home with a Section 2-AAAA victory on Ben Murtough’s two goals and Anderson Ploeger’s solo goal.

Connellsville goes to 0-1 in the section and 2-4 overall.

Girls soccer

Carlynton 5, Brownsville 0 – Rley Mauro scored two goals in the Lady Cougars’ non-section win against Brownsville.

Brownsville slips to 0-3-1 overall.
