Vulcans cruise to 84-71 win over Glenville St.

Donald Whitehead Jr. scored a career-high 26 points to lead California (Pa.) to an 84-71 victory over Glenville State (W.Va.) on Saturday in the Charleston (W.Va.) Tip-Off Challenge.

Bryson Lucas had a double-double for the Vulcans (2-0) with 12 points and 13 rebounds, and added five assists, two blocks and two steals.

Keith Palek III (14), Dalman Alexander (10), and Kadyn Hannah (11) also scored in double figures in the victory.

California only allowed 24 points and held Glenville State to a 24.2 shooting percentage in the second half.

California is on the road Wednesday at Penn State Fayette.

California (Pa.) 112, Charleston (W.Va.) 103, 2OT – The Vulcans needed extra time Friday night to defeat the host Golden Eagles in the first game of the Charleston (W.Va.) Tip-Off Challenge.

Charleston made three foul shots in the final second of regulation to tie the game at 81-81. The Vulcans carried play in the second overtime period with an 18-9 scoring advantage and made 12-of-13 free throw attempts over the two overtimes.

California’s Palek III had a double-double with 27 points and 10 rebounds. Cam Polak scored a career-high 27 points. Whitehead JR. finished with 20 points and nine assists, playing all 50 minutes. Lucas added 16 points, eight rebounds, five assists and four steals. Jordyn Buchanan contributed 14 points.

Stevenson (Md.) 73, Waynesburg 62 – The Yellow Jackets weren’t able to hold a 5-point halftime lead for a non-conference road loss in the season opener.

Waynesburg put together a 9-0 run to close out the first half for a 28-23 halftime lead.

The Mustangs had a strong start in the second half and pulled into a 37-32 lead.

Waynesburg tied the game with 14:21 remaining, but Stevenson responded with a 7-point run.

The Yellow Jackets managed to cut the deficit to 46-43 on back-to-back 3-pointers by Grant Barnhart with 10 minutes left in the game, only to have the home team go on a 7-0 run for a 53-43 lead.

Barnhart and Scott Bilovus shared scoring honors for the Yellow Jackets with 14 points apiece, including each player finishing with four 3-pointers.

Women’s basketball

California (Pa.) 81, Wheeling (W.Va.) 56 – The Vulcans led 41-32 at halftime and then held the visitors to 24 points in the second half for a victory in the MEC/PSAC Conference Challenge hosted by Edinboro.

Alicia Young scored a game-high 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Vulcans (2-0). Nina Shaw finished with 17 points and Allycia Harris added 15.

Kaylee Martin led Wheeling with nine points. Bryana Henderson, Kristel Rattasepp and Kenzie Dalton all scored seven points.

California (Pa.) 9, West Liberty (W.Va.) 74 – The Vulcans posted a victory in the season opener on Friday for the 10th-straight season with a win on the opening day of the MEC/PSAC Challenge.

Young paced California with a career-high 22 points. Harris and Iyahnna Willams both scored 15 points. Nina Shaw (14), Sierra Bermudez (11), and Talia Gillard (11) also finished in double figures.

Bucks County Community College 53, Penn State Fayette 51 – Penn State Fayette opened the season on Saturday with a non-conference road loss.
