Summer is quickly coming to an end

The county league is playing its championship series. The Pittsburgh Steelers arrived in Latrobe for training camp.

American Legion baseball starts the state tournament Saturday, and the annual county golf championship is on the near horizon.

That all adds up to one thing – the time for students to once again walk the hallowed halls of academia isn’t far off.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news kiddies.

Yep, summer is rapidly coming to an end and fall is knocking on the door.

The Fayette County Baseball League opened its best-of-5 championship series between last year’s finalists Thursday night at Carmichaels with Game 2 moving to Hutchinson Field tonight.

The FCBL final pits Carmichaels, who finished first in the regular season, and M&R Transit, the two-time defending champions. M&R Transit won the series in four games last year.

Belle Vernon advanced to the Pennsylvania American Legion Baseball state tournament for the first time and will play its first game of the double-elimination tournament on Saturday at North Allegheny.

– Plus, the world of sports is now in full swing with the Paris Summer Olympics.

With Paris six hours ahead, I imagine the diehard insomniac will be able to dial up NBC and its networks for 24 hours of live and taped coverage of sports the average American only sees every four years.

I watched team handball, which I sort of understand, soccer, which I understand, and rugby 7s, which I’m trying my best to understand.

I understand you’ll want to tune in to NBC this afternoon at 1:30 p.m. for the live broadcast (and 7:30 p.m. for the augmented tape delay version) of the opening ceremonies.

– I’m sure you’ll all be searching feverishly for the breaking (break dancing) competition. (If there was ever a sentence that needed emojis, that was it.)

Ancient Spartans and Athenians are rolling over in their graves with this tidbit.

– The Dream Team famously checked their egos at the door before they crushed the competition in the 1992 Olympics.

The 2024 team needs a valet to tote their egos around. Hopefully, both the men and women will understand their role and leave their egos at the door.

– Wars were suspended when the original Olympic Games were contested in ancient Greece. Wouldn’t it be nice if the world went back to the future with this notion?

Although, most, if not all, of the contested sports were skills needed to be a warrior.

– When Mr. Miyagi traveled back to Okinawa to see his ailing father In Karate Kid II, his dad awoke and said as he looked at his long-lost son, “If I am dreaming, let me never awaken. If I am awake, let me never sleep.”

The way the Pirates have been playing of late, if they are awake, don’t say anything (akin to a no-hitter), and if they’re dreaming, don’t wake them up.

If the Buccos can keep up their post-All Star break play, the squad might actually play games of meaning in September.

– Another bit of reality kiddies – high school golf begins play in earnest on August 9.

Enjoy what’s left of summer!
