Gators need overtime for first win of the season

The Geibel Catholic boys cracked the win column Friday night with a 62-58 overtime road victory in Section 2-A play at Mapletown.

The Gators are 1-7 in the section and 1-19 overall. The Maples slip to 1-7 in the section and 2-15 overall.

The Gators outscored Mapletown in overtime, 6-2, led by Gary Tarbuk’s four points.

Geibel opened the game with a 21-11 lead after the first quarter. The advantage grew to 36-25 at halftime.

Mapletown drew to 46-44 after three quarters and outscored the Gators in the fourth quarter, 12-10, to force overtime.

Tarbuk scored a game-high 24 points. Tommy Kolencik finished with 22 points and Mike Miller added 10.

Jeremiah Mick scored 16 points and Braden McIntire added 14 for Mapletown.

Frazier 42, Carmichaels 34 — The Commodores kept their Section 4-AA playoff hopes alive with a victory on the road at Carmichaels.

The Commodores improved to 5-5 in the section and 10-10 overall. Frazier needs to win one of its two remaining games, playing Burgettstown and Beth-Center on the road. The Commodores hold a two-game lead on Beth-Center (3-7), but lost the first game to the Bulldogs.

Frazier led 9-5 after the first quarter, but the Mikes (1-9, 4-14) rallied for a 16-16 tie at halftime. The Commodores held a 26-18 advantage in the second half.

Frazier’s Dailan McManus scored a game-high 16 points. Brock Alekson pulled down 10 rebounds.

Aydan Adamson paced Carmichaels with 11 points.

Burgettstown 59, Bentworth 44 — The Bearcats fell behind in the first quarter and were unable to rally in a Section 4-AA road loss.

Burgettstown (8-2, 15-5) held quarter leads of 20-8, 33-23 and 55-34.

Ben Hays scored 25 points for Bentworth (2-9, 3-15). Aiden McMurray finished with 12 points.

The Blue Devils’ Zack Schrockman finished with a game-high 31 points. Carson Tkalcevic added 19 points.

Bethel Park 74, Connellsville 49 — The Black Hawks pulled away in the second quarter for a Section 1-AAAA road victory.

Bethel Park (6-2, 11-8) led 14-7 after the first quarter and increased its advantage to 39-18 at halftime.

Anthony Piasecki and Geno Farrell both scored 10 points for the Falcons (1-7, 2-16).

Uniontown 78, Southmoreland 56 — Four Red Raiders scored in double digits to give Red Raiders a Section 4-AAA win and give coach Rob Kezmarsky his 200th section victory.

Calvin Winfrey (20), Jamire Braxton (17), Notorious Grooms (13), and K’Adrian McLee (12) combined for 62 points for Uniontown. Kezmarsky has a 200-71 section mark.

The Red Raiders (7-1, 15-3) led 34-26 at halftime and then pulled away in the third quarter for a 64-39 lead.

Noah Felentzer scored a game-high 23 points for Southmoreland (3-5, 14-6).

Belle Vernon 75, Laurel Highlands 56 — The Section 3-AAAA game was tied at 20-20 after the first quarter, but the Leopards led 31-22 at halftime for the victory.

Belle Vernon (6-2, 11-5) increased its lead to 50-37 after three quarters.

The Leopards’ Zion Moore scored a game-high 19 points. Alonzo Wade (16), Trevor Kovatch (15), and Curtis Wade (10) also finished in double figures.

Jaden Ringer and Aiden Black both scored 14 points for the Mustangs (0-8, 2-18).

Elizabeth Forward 75, Albert Gallatin 71 — The Colonials’ second-half rally came up short in a Section 3-AAAA road loss to the Warriors.

Elizabeth Forward (5-3, 13-6) led 38-28 at halftime. Albert Gallatin sliced the deficit in half and trailed 52-47 heading into the fourth quarter.

Blake White paced the Colonials (3-5, 7-9) with a game-high 29 points. Shymere Wilson scored 16 points and Mykel Belt added 10.

Charlie Meehleib (22), Isaiah Turner (13), Daniel Spence (13), and Tyler Basic (11) finished in double figures for the Warriors.

Washington 72, Waynesburg Central 28 — The Prexies rolled to a Section 4-AAA victory over the Raiders.

Cole Headlee and Dane Woods scored seven points each for Waynesburg (2-8, 6-13).

Ruben Gordon led the way for Washington (9-1, 12-7) with a game-high 21 points. De’Ondre Daugherty finished with 13 points and Zxavian Willis added 11.

Monessen 66, West Greene 55 — The Greyhounds avenged an earlier loss to the Pioneers with a Section 2-A road victory.

Monessen improves to 7-1 in the section and 15-3 overall. West Greene is 6-2 in the section and 11-8 overall.

The Pioneers led 15-14 after the first quarter, but the Greyhounds surged into a 38-29 halftime lead. Monessen held a slight 28-26 advantage in the second half.

Monessen’s Lorenzo Gardner led all scorers with 30 points. Rodney Johnson added 12.

Lane Allison paced West Greene with 21 points. Matt Wassil scored 15 and Parker Burns added 11.

California 51, Jefferson-Morgan 47 — The Trojans’ rally in the fourth quarter produced Section 2-A home victory over the Rockets.

Jefferson-Morgan (4-4, 12-8) led 15-9 after the first quarter and 21-18 at halftime. California sliced into the deficit and trailed 39-30 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Trojans (5-3, 6-13) outscored the visitors in the final eight minutes, 21-8, for the come-from-behind win.

Vinny Manzella scored a game-high 18 points for California. Jacob Ziolecki finished with 18 points.

John Woodward Jr. paced Jefferson-Morgan with 12 points and Houston Guesman added 11.

Girls basketball

Charleroi 69, West Greene 46 — The Lady Cougars’ McKenna DeUnger entered the 2023-24 season four points shy of 1,000 career points, but an injury suffered at the end of soccer season led her to miss her final basketball season.

DeUnger managed to score the four points she needed in Charleroi’s non-section win at West Greene.

Charleroi led 28-15 at the end of the first quarter and 46-26 at halftime.

Bella Carroto paced the Lady Cougars with a game-high 21 points. Ella Sypolt finished with 17 points and Riley Jones added 12.

Kendra Tharp scored 16 and Madelyn Roberts finished with nine for West Greene.
