Caroline Gorley Rigg, known as Carney, passed away on Monday, January 13, 2025, at the age of 96, following a brief illness.
She was born in Uniontown, PA, on November 4, 1928, to Charles H. and Caroline O’B. Gorley. Caroline was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, George S. Rigg, and her siblings: Lelia Gorley Rossi VanSickle, Col. Charles H. Gorley Jr., Nancy Belle Gorley Rossi, James T. Gorley, and Ruth Ann Gorley Shanaberger.
Caroline lived a full life marked by various achievements. She graduated from Uniontown High School and attended the Sayre School in Lexington, KY, followed by the Maryland College for Women in Lutherville, MD, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism. She began her career as the Assistant Society Editor at the Uniontown Evening Standard and later became the Assistant Woman’s Editor at the Pittsburgh Sun-Telegraph. Her passion for history and nature led her to work as an Interpretive Ranger at Fort Necessity National Battlefield, where she shared her knowledge with visitors.
A lifelong member of St. Peter’s Episcopal (Anglican) Church, Caroline was also involved in the Green Gardeners and the Fayette County Historical Society, where she recently lectured about the life of her father. She was a former member of the Uniontown Hospital Auxiliary Board. Additionally, Caroline served as a Cub Scout Den Mother and Girl Scout Leader, influencing many children in her community.
She had a love for literature, enjoyed cooking, and was known for her enthusiasm as a hostess. An avid bridge player, she also enjoyed friendly games of poker with friends.
Caroline is survived by her sons, G. Samuel Rigg (Jewel) of Mifflin County, and Bryon G. Rigg (Lori) of Dunwoody, GA; as well as her grandchildren, Rebecca and Ben. She also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews who will remember her fondly.
Arrangements are under the care of the DONALD R. CRAWFORD FUNERAL HOME, FARMINGTON, PA. By request of the family, there will be no viewing.
