Richard “Rich” Zelina, 92, of Bobtown, passed away Saturday, December 21, 2024, in Sundale Nursing Center of Morgantown, W.Va. He was born Friday, January 1, 1932, in Canonsburg, a son of the late Joseph Zelina and Margaret Kosztur Zelina.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 55 years, Emily, who passed away September 3, 2012; his brother, Joseph Zelina; his sister, Lillian Gallatin; and his son-in-law, Vince Zapotosky.
Rich was a devoted and faithful member of Saint Ignatius Catholic Church worship site of Saint Matthias Parish in Bobtown, where he volunteered doing maintenance in and outside of the church and grounds.
He was a veteran of the United States Army, and a retired coal miner having worked for Jones & Laughlin Steel Corp., Shannopin Mine of Bobtown, and United Mine Workers of America Union Local #6159.
He also enjoyed the occasional trip to the casino, being a Boy Scout leader, supporting all of the Pittsburgh sports teams, hunting, and especially fishing and supporting the local youth sports teams – especially loved watching his children play for these teams.
Rich is survived by his sister, Veronica Joseph of Columbia Station, Ohio; three sons, Mark Zelina and wife Colleen of Oceanport, N.J., Tom Zelina and wife Karen of New Albany, Ohio, and Rick Zelina and wife Lisa of Huntersville, N.C.; one daughter, Carol Zapotosky of Uniontown; seven grandchildren, Kelsey and husband Logan Klinger, Sarah, Michael and wife Kayla, Eric, Andrew, Elizabeth (Lizzi), and William; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received from 9 to 10:30 a.m., when brief prayers of transfer will be said, Friday, December 27, in the LOUIS E. RANDOLPH FUNERAL HOME, Thomas B. Rudolph, funeral director and supervisor, 15 N. Main Street, Point Marion. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 a.m. in Saint Ignatius Church, with the Rev. Fr. Francis Frazer as celebrant. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park, Point Marion.
