Gerald Eugene Davis, Sr.
Palmer
Gerald Eugene Davis, Sr. a beloved father, husband, grandfather, and friend, passed away on Saturday, December 14, 2024 at the age of 82. Born on April 10, 1942, in Palmer, Pennsylvania, to the late Clyde and Hattie Bell Shaffer Davis.
After graduating from high school, Jerry joined the United States Air Force, where he became a skilled C-130 airplane mechanic. A year into his service, Jerry married Judy Bogozi and moved to Seward Air Force Base in Smyrna, Tennessee, where Jerry was stationed.
Upon his honorable discharge, Jerry and Judy returned to Pennsylvania with their newborn daughter, Debbie, and later welcomed their children, Julie and Jerry Jr., into the world. Jerry’s devotion to Judy was unwavering throughout their 63 years of marriage, and the two shared a deep love for one another. They loved to take cruises together, eagerly looking forward to their next adventure on the water. Jerry delighted in showering Judy with gifts, enjoying dinner dates, and cherishing quiet moments spent in each other’s company. Their life together was filled with shared joys, laughter, and an unbreakable partnership.
Becoming PapPap was one of the greatest joys of Jerry’s life. His grandchildren brought them immense happiness. Jerry loved spending time with his grandchildren, and any occasion together was an opportunity for celebration. Whether it was a holiday, a special gathering, or a simple afternoon, Jerry treasured every moment with his grandkids, making memories that will last a lifetime.
Above all, Jerry’s greatest love was his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He began each day with study of the Bible, finding strength and guidance in God’s Word. Jerry particularly cherished listening to the teachings of J. Vernon Magee, whose ministry deeply impacted his faith. Over the years, Jerry faithfully served his church by teaching Sunday school and occasionally filling in to preach when the need arose. His faith was the foundation of his life, and he lived with a deep sense of devotion, integrity, and love for others.
Jerry dedicated over 30 years to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), ultimately serving as Assistant District Manager. He was deeply committed to the safety of miners, serving on and training Mine Rescue Teams throughout his career. One of the most defining moments of his career came during the Quecreek Mine Disaster in 2002, when nine miners were trapped underground after a flooding incident. Jerry played a pivotal role in the rescue operation, making key decisions that contributed to the safe recovery of all nine miners. His leadership, expertise, and quick thinking during the crisis saved lives and made a lasting impact on the mining community, cementing his legacy as a true hero in mine safety.
In his later years, Jerry lived at Newhaven at Lindwood in the Life Stories Memory Care Facility, where he spent his final two years. Though his memories faded, Jerry’s light never dimmed. He always lit up when his beloved wife, Judy, arrived for one of her countless visits. The caregivers at Newhaven grew to love Jerry dearly, accepting him as part of their extended family. Despite the challenges of memory loss, Jerry’s playful spirit and sense of humor remained intact-he was known for his ability to bring a smile to the faces of those around him, often with a well-timed joke. His presence, even in his final days, was a source of warmth and joy to everyone he encountered.
The family expresses their heartfelt appreciation to the staff at Life Stories for caring for Jerry with respect, love, and dignity during his time there.
The family would also like to extend special thanks and gratitude to Bridges Hospice. The compassionate care and love they provided to Jerry in his final days were nothing short of extraordinary. They were true angels on earth, and their support will always be cherished.
