Dunbar Township Elementary School educator competing for AmericaÎÞëÊÓƵ™s Favorite Teacher
A Fayette County teacher has entered a nationwide contest to help purchase an inclusive playground at her school.
Megan Barrick, a life skills teacher at Dunbar Township Elementary School, said her school has more special education programs than any other school in the district, which means they’re in need of an inclusive playground.
“We have kiddos in wheelchairs and others with sensory needs, so sometimes it’s just difficult for them to play on playground equipment and be included,” she said, adding that such a playground can cost up to $50,000 or more.
She then discovered the America’s Favorite Teacher contest where the winner receives $25,000 along with a trip to Hawaii and an interview with “Reader’s Digest”.
“It seems like a personal win; however, I feel really funny taking money from something I love doing,” she said.
If she gets the prize, she said she’ll put the $25,000 toward the playground equipment.
“I love my kids, and my kids love me. I just want to help them anyway I can.”
Barrick has lasted for five rounds that started in March and is currently in the top spot in her group with voting to close today. Then there will be about four more voting rounds to go until the contest ends in late May.
