UniontownÎÞëÊÓƵ™s Notorious Grooms (28) and Nathan Serock (3) combine to tackle Perry quarterback DÎÞëÊÓƵ™Avery Latimer for a loss during last Friday nightÎÞëÊÓƵ™s game at Bill Power Stadium. The Red RaidersÎÞëÊÓƵ™ 34-6 win was the programÎÞëÊÓƵ™s 499th all time. Uniontown will go for No. 500 this afternoon against Carrick at Cupples Stadium in Pittsburgh.

Uniontown will shoot for football program win No. 500 on the road, Albert Gallatin hosts Connellsville in a match-up of Fayette County independent teams and Southmoreland takes its high-scoring offense to Laurel Highlands in a trio of intriguing Week Two games on today’s schedule.

There are four clashes of local teams among the 11 games involving area squads. In addition to the Scotties and Mustangs, and the Falcons and Colonials, Carmichaels will host Frazier and Waynesburg Central will visit California.

All are non-conference games that begin at 7 p.m. except for Uniontown which has a 3:30 p.m. kickoff against Carrick at Cupples Stadium in Pittsburgh.

The Red Raiders (1-1) picked up the school’s 499th football victory last week with a 34-6 win over Perry at Bill Power Stadium and they’ll take aim at No. 500 when they take on the Raiders (0-2) who fell to AG, 42-6, last week.

“The kids are excited,” Uniontown coach Keith Jeffries said. “They’re looking forward to having the opportunity to be part of the group to reach 500 wins in school history.”

The Colonials bounced back from a season-opening 28-6 loss at Greensburg Salem to even their record at 1-1, while the Falcons (0-2) are coming off a gut-wrenching 48-41 four overtime loss to visiting Meadville.

Three teams were not able to finish their games last week due to thunderstorms which pushed the season-opener for two of them – Carmichaels and Belle Vernon – back another week after both played scrimmages during Week Zero.

The Leopards were trailing at Aliquippa 13-0 in the first quarter and the Mikes were tied at Sto-Rox 8-8 in the second when those games were called with both going as no contests.

Tonight Belle Vernon hosts Central Valley in a match-up of perennial powers and the Mikes go up against a visiting Commodores (1-1) team coming off an impressive 36-0 win over Mapletown.

Laurel Highlands’ game at Ambridge also was wiped out before either team scored. The Mustangs (1-0), who topped visiting Uniontown in their opener, 45-20, return to Mustang Field to face a Scotties team (2-0) that has scored 94 points in its first two games with home wins over Valley (45-20) and East Allegheny (49-14).

Waynesburg (1-1) continues its trio of games against Tri-County South schools when it goes to California (1-1) after winning at West Greene in Week Zero but falling to visiting Jefferson-Morgan last week.

The Trojans (1-1) have been a mixed bag so far, exploding to a 62-26 win over visiting Serra Catholic in their opener before suffering a 27-3 loss at Cornell last week.

The Rockets (2-0) have shown to have an explosive offense in opening the season with a pair of road victories, 35-6 at Chartiers-Houston and 34-28 at Waynesburg. They host Burgettstown (1-0) tonight.

In other games involving local teams, West Greene (0-2) hosts powerful Fort Cherry (2-0), Mapletown (1-1) visits Chartiers-Houston (1-1), Beth-Center (0-1) hosts the WPIAL’s highest-scoring team in Monessen (2-0, 121 points) and Mount Pleasant (1-1) is at home against Burrell (0-2).

Brownsville (0-1) is off for the second week in a row.
