Uniontown's Calvin Winfrey III glides into the end zone at the end of a 45-yard touchdown run against Brownsville on Sept. 27 at Redstone Field. The Red Raiders travel to Maryland tonight for a game aganst Northern Garrett.

There are pros and cons to having an off week during the high school football season.

Uniontown coach Keith Jeffries addressed both sides of the coin as the Red Raiders head to Northern Garrett in Maryland for a non-conference game tonight.

“The week off, I won’t say it hurt us but it gets you out of your rhythm,” said Jeffries whose team is 3-3. “We’re relatively healthy, that’s the good thing. The week off helped us out in getting some of our kids some treatment and getting them back to being as close as they can to a full go.”

The Huskies sport a 2-3 record but are a formidable foe. They defeated visiting Albert Gallatin, 31-21, on Sept. 13.

“The last three teams we play are relatively tough between Northern, Connellsville and Southern (Garrett),” Jeffries said. “The kids are looking forward to getting back into it and actually playing a game.”

The Red Raiders, who have used several different quarterbacks the past two games, will stick with Calvin Winfrey III behind center tonight after his stellar performance in a 49-28 win at Brownsville two weeks ago.

“Cam Dugan was our quarterback before he got sidelined with a concussion in the Perry game,” Jeffries said. “He played there some against Brownsville, but we’re moving him to slot receiver and we’ll probably continue to go with Calvin at quarterback this week.

“Calvin ran the ball real well for us at Brownsville. That’s kind of the dynamic he adds there. He has the point guard mentality, too, about trying to get the ball spread around.”

Uniontown is one of 13 area teams in action tonight with Albert Gallatin (4-3) on an off week, Frazier (0-4, 1-6) traveling to Riverview (1-3, 2-4) for a noon kickoff Saturday in a Class 1A Eastern Conference game and the Beth-Center (0-4, 0-6) at Mapletown (0-4, 1-6) Class 1A Tri-County South Conference game moved to 7 p.m. Monday.

The Leopards and Mustangs are in a four-way tie for second place behind frontrunning Thomas Jefferson (2-0, 7-0).

The Scotties and Vikings are locked in a three-way tie for first place with Elizabeth Forward (2-0, 4-3).
