Laurel HighlandsÎÞëÊÓƵ™ Antwan Black heads for the end zone on a 55-yard touchdown reception on a pass from Noah Lion in Friday nightÎÞëÊÓƵ™s game against Uniontown at Mustang Field. Black scored two touchdowns in LHÎÞëÊÓƵ™s 45-20 win and is tied for third place with 12 points in the ÎÞëÊÓƵ-Standard Touchdown Club standings after Week Zero.

It didn’t take long for a frontrunner to be established in the 2024 ÎÞëÊÓƵ-Standard Touchdown Club standings.

California running back started the season with a bang, ringing up six touchdowns and a pair of two-point conversions in the Trojans’ 62-26 romp over visiting Serra Catholic.

Qualk scored on TD runs of 1, 55, 7, 40, 4 and – saving the longest for last – 58 yards to build up an immediate 25-point lead in the TD Club standings.

Jefferson-Morgan’s John Woodward sits alone in second place of the slate of Week Zero games with 15 points, scoring three different ways in the Rockets’ 35-6 win at Chartiers-Houston. Woodward booted three extra points, ran for a 2-yard touchdown and pulled in a 3-yard TD pass from Houston Guesman, who also connected with Deakyn Dehoet on scoring tosses of 25 and 39 yards.

Dehoet is one of eight players tied for third place at 12 points. Laurel Highlands and Southmoreland each had two players in that group.

The Mustangs’ Antwan Black found the end zone on a 15-yard run and a 55-yard pass from Noah Lion in a 45-20 win over Uniontown at Mustang Field. Gio Guerriere added touchdown runs of 1 and 20 yards for LH.

Camren Phillips ran back the first kickoff for a touchdown this season, going 84 yards in the Scotties’ 52-20 win over Valley, and also scored on a 2-yard run. Teammate Ethan Shawley had TD runs of 3 and 23 yards.

Also scoring 12 points in Week Zero were Brody Hutter of Mount Pleasant on runs of 5 and 1 yard, Jacob Stephenson of Waynesburg Central on runs of 6 and 13 yards, and Uniontown’s Calvin Winfrey III on receptions of 39 and 19 yards from Cam Dugan.

Also very noteworthy in Southmoreland’s win was the performance by Jake Kaylor, who scored eight points with three coming on a school-record 50-yard field goal.

Even so, Kaylor was only the third-highest scoring kicker of the week among local teams. Mount Pleasant’s Jarett Garn and Laurel Highlands’ Tanner Bruzda each notched nine points.

Garn kicked a pair of field goals, connecting from 23 and 37 yards out in the Vikings’ 28-27 loss at Jeannette. Bruzda booted a 22-yard field goal and was a perfect six for six on extra points.

Southmoreland’s Stanley Betters and Mount Pleasant’s Cole Chatfield recorded the first two pick-sixes of the season. Betters brought back an interception 39 yards for a score and Chatfield returned an interception 8 yards for a TD.
