Laurel HighlandsÎÞëÊÓƵ™ Noah Lion runs the ball against Uniontown during last yearÎÞëÊÓƵ™s game at Bill Power Stadium. The two teams meet again tonight at Laurel Highlands.

There will be no conference games during the first week of the high school football season which begins tonight with 13 teams in action for Week Zero.

That doesn’t mean there won’t be anything on the line, however.

Uniontown makes the short trip to Laurel Highlands as the two continue their crosstown rivalry in a game that will surely have emotions running high.

“That’s a great rivalry. It gets the kids excited,” Mustangs coach Rich Kolesar said. “It helps to keep the focus through camp when you know that game’s coming up pretty quick, so it’ll be exciting.”

The two Fayette County schools have faced each other the past three seasons after a three-year hiatus in the series from 2018 to 2020, and the Mustangs have held the upper hand since then.

Laurel Highlands won at Bill Power Stadium, 42-14, in 2021, at home against the Red Raiders, 50-6, in 2022, and at Uniontown again last year, 50-13.

Red Raiders coach Keith Jeffries feels good about his team heading into the regular season.

“We’re happy with the progress we made during camps to this point,” Jeffries said. “We’re looking for some big plays out of some more of our seniors. Hopefully, they lead the team to a successful season and a good game against Laurel.”

In another meeting of nearby teams, this one in Greene County, West Greene will host Waynesburg Central.

Uniontown is one of now four area teams that have pulled out of the WPIAL in favor of independent status, and all will be playing tonight with Albert Gallatin playing at Greensburg Salem, Connellsville hosting Latrobe and Brownsville hosting Bentworth.

The two Falcon squads, LH and West Greene are four of eight teams who will be at home tonight. The others are Mapletown (vs. Avella), California (vs. Serra Catholic), Beth-Center (vs. Riverview) and Southmoreland (vs. Valley)

Also playing tonight are Jefferson-Morgan at Chartiers-Houston and Mount Pleasant at Jeannette.

All of tonight’s games kick off at 7.

Frazier opens its season Saturday with a 12:30 p.m. game at Summit Academy.

Two teams have opted to play a second scrimmage during Week Zero. Carmichaels hosts Bishop Canevin at 6 p.m. and Belle Vernon is at West Allegheny at 7 p.m.

Those teams open their regular season next Friday with non-conference games. The Leopards host Central Valley and the Mikes travel to Sto-Rox.
