A child was flown to UPMC Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh after being struck by a car Saturday afternoon in Charleroi.

Robert Whiten Jr., Charleroi fire chief, said the incident occurred around 2:20 p.m. in the 1200 block of Lincoln Avenue.

“When we arrived on scene, the young child, probably between 1 and 1 ½ years old, was laying in the back of the police car,” Whiten said. “Our EMTs from the fire department were doing basic life support on the patient until the ambulance arrived.”

Details of the girl’s condition were unavailable. The accident remains under investigation by the Charleroi Regional Police Department.

Responding to the scene with the Charleroi Fire Department were the Charleroi Regional Police Department and Rostraver West Newton Emergency Medical Services. Whiten said members of several area fire departments who live nearby came to the scene.

“It was a very hectic situation,” Whiten said. “Always when there is a kid involved it’s very hectic. Guys were scrambling to do everything they could. We had equipment flying off the truck that I didn’t even know we had. Everyone was trying to do something because when there’s a child involved, you don’t want to see anything more happening than what’s going on.”
