A medical helicopter lands in a cul-de-sac at the Burkett Manor housing development in South Strabane to transport an injured worker to a Pittsburgh hospital after he fell Tuesday morning from the second story of a home under construction.

A worker was seriously injured Tuesday morning after falling from the second floor of a house under construction in South Strabane Township.

The worker, who was not identified, was installing an HVAC system when he fell from an elevated area of the house shortly before 11 a.m., South Strabane fire Chief Jordan Cramer said.

The man was working with a construction team building a new house in the Burkett Manor plan near Route 19 and Racetrack Road in the township, Cramer said.

Other workers at the site apparently witnessed the man fall and immediately contacted first responders for help.

“We don’t know exactly how he ended up falling,” Cramer said. “They were able to call 911 as soon as they noticed he had fallen.”

Cramer said the man suffered “pretty severe injuries,” but was conscious at the scene and able to communicate with firefighters and medics while they tended to him. The man was flown by medical helicopter to UPMC Presbyterian hospital in Pittsburgh for treatment, Cramer said. He declined to identify the man or elaborate on what specific injuries he suffered in the fall.

It’s not known what company the man was working for at the construction site. The housing plan is being developed by Heartland Homes, and a representative who answered a phone call from a reporter Tuesday afternoon said she had no information on the incident.

Cramer said South Strabane police were not called to the scene, and he was unsure if they would eventually investigate the matter. It was not known if the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration was investigating the incident.
