California man accused of stealing $130K from local club

1 min read

California police arrested a man Monday on charges stemming from the theft of more than $130,000 from a club’s games of chance machines.

Police charged Timothy Hoffman, 63, of California, earlier this month with felonies of theft by deception and deceptive business practices. Online court records indicate he was arraigned Monday morning before District Judge Joshua Kanalis.

According to the criminal complaint, Hoffman was a member at the California Young Men’s Club at 1140 Edwards St., and was in charge of emptying the machines of money every other week. Half of the proceeds went to the company that owns the machines while the other half remained with the club.

Rick Anderson, the club’s chief financial officer, realized in February that Hoffman was shorting the club and contacted police, according to charging documents.

The club declined comment when reached by phone Tuesday.

According to the criminal complaint, police looked through receipts from January 2021 to February 2024 and found that Hoffman had withheld $133,049 from the Young Men’s Club.

Kanalis set bond for the same amount that Hoffman is accused of stealing. Court records indicate he posted bond through a professional bondsman.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 10:15 a.m. July 10.
