Firefighter hospitalized following Brownsville fire
A firefighter was hospitalized with heat exhaustion Sunday as a result of a fire at a former church in Brownsville.
Brownsville Fire Company Chief Richard Black said firefighters were dispatched shortly after 5:30 p.m. to the old First Baptist Church at 128 Market St.
“It has been abandoned and condemned for 20-plus years probably,” Black said. “It was more of an exterior operation because of how involved it was.”
According to Black, a firefighter from Fayette City was transported to Penn Highlands Mon Valley Hospital. He was later released.
Black said it was not clear where or how the fire started in the church. The state police fire marshal is investigating.
It took crews about five hours to clear the scene. Multiple companies also responded, including fire departments from South Brownsville, West Brownsville, Bentleyville, Fayette City, Adah, La Belle, Grindstone and Republic.
