Two Washington County teens accused of a shooting at an apartment building near Waynesburg, wounding a woman and a 2-year-old child, will stand trial on numerous charges.

The cases against Darius Elijah Wolfe and Jeremy Scott Currey were held for court by District Judge Thomas Ankrom during their Friday preliminary hearing in connection with the July 13 shooting that injured two.

Wolfe, 18, of Claysville, and Currey, 19, of Washington, were each facing five felony counts of attempted homicide, conspiracy to commit attempted homicide and conspiracy for aggravated assault and one misdemeanor charge of conspiracy and disorderly conduct. Ankrom dismissed only one count of conspiracy against Wolfe, while he dismissed all five attempted homicide charges against Currey.

State police said five shots were fired inside the apartment unit at Mountainview Gardens in Franklin Township. The woman was shot in the left eye, while the toddler was struck in the right thigh. Both victims were taken to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, W.Va., for treatment and were later released. Investigators did not identify the two victims or offer a motive for the shooting in court documents.

Greene County District Attorney Brianna Vanata said testimony during a joint preliminary hearing for the co-defendants indicated that Wolfe was the only shooter, but the incident apparently started following a dispute between Currey and the woman who was shot. Five people besides the two suspects were in the apartment unit when the shooting occurred, Vanata said.

The woman testified that she lost sight in her eye and will need more medical procedures, Vanata said, while the boy has since recovered without any major issues.

“It’s miraculous that he walked away from that with no lasting injuries that we’re aware of at this time,” Vanata said of the toddler.

Currey’s defense attorney, Timothy Ross, declined to comment on the case, while Wolfe’s public defender, Harry Cancelmi, did not return a phone message from a reporter.

Both teens, who were arrested July 22, are being held without bond at the Greene County jail while they await trial on the charges. Their formal arraignment is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sept. 23 at the Greene County Courthouse.
