Local roundup: Lady Pioneers uses balanced attack to top Mapletown

Madelyn Roberts scored nine points in a balanced attack and host West Greene gradually pulled away from Mapletown to earn a 41-23 victory in a Section 2-A girls basketball clash Monday night.

West Greene led 9-5, 22-9 and 32-13 at the quarter breaks.

Marissa Tharp added eight points for the Lady Pioneers (1-1, 5-1) who had nine different players hit the scoring column.

Makenna Lotspeich scored a game-high 11 points for the Lady Maples (0-2, 2-5).

Fort Cherry 63, Carmichaels 9 – Brooke Cornali tossed in 16 points and Jazlyn Martino added 15 for the Lady Rangers (3-2) in a non-section victory over the visiting Lady Mikes (0-6).

Saturday, Dec. 14

Doug Conroy Memorial Duals — Jefferson-Morgan went 5-1 in the wrestling duals at Ringgold High School.

The Rockets (6-2) defeated McKeesport (50-23), Meyersdale (60-18), Albert Gallatin (48-29), Ligonier Valley (57-15) and West Mifflin (34-33), but lost to the host school, 42-30.

Johnny Gilbert and Brayden Hanning won all six of their bouts for Jefferson-Morgan.

Friday, Dec. 13

Beth-Center 55, Mapletown 19 – The Bulldogs outscored the host Maples 19-0 in the first quarter on their way to a boys basketball victory in the Section 3-AA opener for both teams.

Jason Zellie led the way for Beth-Center (1-0, 3-2) by matching Mapletown’s total for the game with 19 points. Brayden Hull and Tyler Korowski each had eight points for B-C.

Lucas Stevenson had seven points for the Maples (0-1, 0-4).

Jefferson-Morgan 66, Burgettstown 44 – Houston Guesman tallied a game-high 19 points as the host Rockets triumphed over the Blue Devils in the Section 3-AA opener for both teams.

Jase Bedillion tossed in 16 points for Jefferson-Morgan (1-0, 3-2) which took control in the first quarter by outscoring Burgettstown 23-9.

The Rockets led 38-25 at halftime and 53-35 after three quarters.

Colton County and Parker Rommes led the Blue Devils (0-1, 1-3) with 15 and 11 points.

Aquinas Academy 94, Waynesburg Central 67 – Jake Guillen went over the 1,000-point mark of his career with 29 points and Aquinas outscored the Raiders 32-11 in the fourth quarter to break open a close game in non-section action.

Sam Duer followed close behind with 28 points and David Zaharko had 12 for Aquinas (5-1).

The score was tied 15-15 after one quarter and Aquinas led 41-32 at halftime and 62-56 after three.

Waynesburg (0-5) put four players in double figures in scoring, led by Cole Headlee who totaled 20 points, five assists and four rebounds. The Raiders also got 14 points and 10 rebounds from Dane Woods, 14 points, eight assists and five rebounds from Austin Surber and 10 points and 11 boards from Alex Eck.

Thursday, Dec. 12

Geibel Catholic 46, West Greene 27 — In a battle of unbeatens, the Lady Gators went on a 12-1 run in the fourth quarter to pull away in the Section 2-A girls basketball opener for both teams at Geibel Catholic Junior/Senior High School.

Geibel junior Emma Larkin led all scorers with 17 points, including nine in the fourth period. She was 5 of 6 from the foul line in the final frame. Teammate and freshman Mallory Clemmer added 16 points.

The Lady Gators (1-0, 7-0) had a 12-9 lead after the first period and had a 27-11 advantage at halftime.

The Lady Pioneers (0-1, 4-1) outscored the home team, 12-6, in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 33-23. Geibel had a 13-4 advantage in the fourth.

West Greene’s Kendra Tharp scored a game-high 13 points.

Waynesburg Central 48, Brownsville 42 — The Lady Raiders outscored the Lady Falcons by eight in the third quarter and won the Class 3A Section 3 opener for both teams.

Waynesburg (1-0, 3-1) had a two-point lead after the first quarter, but Brownsville (0-1, 3-2) used a 12-8 edge in the second period for a 23-21 halftime advantage.

The Lady Raiders outscored the Lady Falcons, 12-4, for a 33-27 lead heading into the fourth period. Both teams scored 15 in the final frame.

Waynesburg’s Chatham Knight made six 3-pointers and scored a game-high 20 points. The Lady Raiders’ Avery Davis added 15.

Skyler Gates led Brownsville in scoring with 14 points. Ciara Horabik had 10.

Frazier 47, Carmichaels 31 — The Lady Commodores had a 13-point lead after the opening quarter and held on for a non-section victory.

Frazier’s Allie Yauch had a game-high 13 points, as the Lady Commodores improved to 3-4.

The Lady Mikes’ Ali Jacobs had eight points.

Avella 67, Mapletown 32 — Sydney Strope put in 27 points in the Lady Eagles’ Class A Section 2 victory at Mapletown.

Avella (1-0, 4-2) had a 23-4 lead after the first quarter and a 28-16 halftime advantage. The Lady Eagles won the third quarter, 19-11, and the fourth, 20-5.

Avella’s Ava Frank had 18 points.

The Lady Maples (0-1, 2-4) were led in scoring by Makenna Lotspeich, who had 16 points. She added four rebounds and steals. Teammate Nicole Barrera had 13 rebounds and Emma Zalar added 10.

Boys basketball

West Greene 54, Carmichaels 27 — Lane Allison had 25 points as the Pioneers won their Class 2A Section 3 opener over the Mikes.

Carmichaels (0-1, 0-4) was led in scoring by Steve Lewis, who had eight points.

West Greene improved to 2-2 overall.

Wednesday, Dec. 11

Waynesburg Central 42, South Fayette 16 – Waynesburg won four bouts by fall in a victory over South Fayette in Section 2-AAA wrestling action.

The Raiders’ Jesse Huff (133), Aidan Pester (172), Jacob Stephenson (215) and Roan Tustin (285) recorded pins.

Randy Whyel (152) and Brock Evans (160) won by decision, as the Raiders improved to 1-0 in the section and 2-0 overall.

Brice Shultz (121) and Ky-Mani Sumpter (189) won by forfeit.

West Greene 39, Laurel Highlands 21 — The Pioneers’ Brice Smith, Hayden Hamilton and Colin Whyte recorded pins in a non-section victory at West Greene.

West Greene’s Caleb Orndoff earned a 7-4 victory in the ultimate tiebreaker over Josh Reed at 145.

The Mustangs’ Parker Hoff won by fall at 215. Teammate Quenten Gouker defeated Levi Yeater, 7-2, at 152.

Laurel Highlands’ Allan Carpinelli (133) and Anthony Weygandt (139) won by forfeit.

Harlan Truitt (114), Noah Collins (121) and Reece Tharp (172) won by forfeit for the Pioneers (1-1). The Mustangs fell to 1-1.

Jefferson-Morgan 52, South Park 8 — The Rockets used four pins en route to a non-section victory over the Eagles.

Jefferson-Morgan’s E.J. Lingenfield (127), Colton Humphreys (139), Payton Bastian (160), and Landon Heath (285) picked up falls for the Rockets (1-1).

Jefferson-Morgan’s Johnny Gilbert, Dominic Sowden and DeSean Johnson all won by decision. Teammate Jase Bedilion earned a major decision at 215.

The Rockets’ Brayden Hanning won by forfeit at 107.

The Eagles had a team point deducted due to a technical violation.

Tuesday, Dec. 10

Frazier 59, Mapletown 28 – Dalian McManus tossed in 18 points as the Commodores rolled past the host Maples in a boys basketball non-section game.

Kolby Stewart and Conlan Higbee followed with 14 points each for Frazier (2-3).

Lucas Stevenon topped Mapletown (0-3) in scoring with seven points.

Avelle 55, West Greene 50 – The Eagles used a 20-13 edge in the fourth quarter to pull out a non-section win over the visiting Pioneers.

West Greene led 12-11, 25-22 and 37-35 at the quarter breaks but couldn’t hold off Avella in the fourth.

Brayden Fuller led the way for the Eagles (3-2) with a game-high 20 points. Eli Maidment contributed 13 points and Bryce Wright had 12.

Patrick Durbin tallied 18 points for West Greene (1-2) and Parker Burns chipped in with 12.

Jefferson-Morgan 47, Bentworth 29 – Dayten Marion’s 15 points led the Rockets in a non-section win at Bentworth.

Jase Bedillion followed with 13 points for J-M (2-2), which outscored the hosts 30-16 in the second half.

Chris Harper had 11 points for the Bearcats (2-2).

Charleroi 65, Carmichaels 30 – The host Cougars put four players in double figures in a non-section win over the Mikes.

Shea Smith and Braeden Todaro scored 13 points apiece for Charleroi (3-2) which also got 11 points each from Noah Pletcher and Amaru Staub.

Robbie Wilson-Jones scored a game-high 14 points for Carmichaels (0-3).
