A day of fun offered in historic Hopwood during the National Road Festival
The Hopwood Villagers, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving history and creating opportunities for the community, will once again celebrate the National Road Festival with plenty of entertainment and activities.
On May 18, yard sales will line the road, cars will be displayed at the Hopwood Social Hall and bounce houses will be set up in the Your Pets parking lot for young visitors.
All activities are free, with the exception of food and drink.
The Hopwood Historical Cemetery Association will offer a special tour and activity at the cemetery, packed with history of the village, and the wagon train is expected to make its way down Route 40 in the afternoon.
“We always coordinate with the wagon train and follow it up with a parade,” said Tange McDowell, treasurer of the Hopwood Villagers. “We’ll have food trucks and there will be a live band at the Hopwood House.”
The Hopwood House has been open since February but will celebrate its grand opening two days before the National Road Festivities. Built in 1816, the restaurant’s building served as the residence of Moses Hopwood, the son of John Hopwood, who founded the village. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Most recently, the house was purchased by Dr. Justine Blout and McDowell, and operates as a fine dining establishment.
“Variety Pack will be our live band, and Hopwood House is a full restaurant and bar so people can hang out there for the afternoon,” McDowell said. “We just hope it’s a day out with family, enjoying their community. The town is very important, and it just keeps growing. We love these events that bring the community together.”
Festivities will begin around 9 a.m. and the live band is scheduled at 11 a.m.
For those that would like to volunteer or want to get involved, McDowell said the Hopwood Villagers are always looking for new members.
“We do three big events per year, and it’s not super demanding but the more hands to help, the better,” McDowell said. “It’s always a good feeling when we have a beautiful day and the streets are filled with people and activities.”
