The Bituminous King Coal Show starts Saturday, Aug. 17, with the annual golf outing and runs until Aug. 24

In 1953, a few Carmichael residents partnered with organizations in the area to create a festival that would bring attention to the coal industry and the hard working miners who support it.

One year later, The King Coal Association, which will hold its weeklong show Aug. 17-24, was formed.

“The coal scene in our community is what built these towns back in the day. We want to celebrate what continues to sustain families in our area. There have been ups and downs over the years but it’s helped us press on,” said Katlyn Fox, publicity director for The King Coal Association and chairperson for the Pennsylvania Bituminous Coal Queen Pageant.

Events kick off on Saturday, Aug. 17, with the annual golf outing. Sunday brings the return of the Battle of the Barrel, which pits local fire departments against one another in a variety of races and obstacles. The event will be held at Carmichaels & Cumberland Township Volunteer Fire Department.

“It’s open to the public to come in and watch, and there will be food trucks available,” Fox said.

Later that evening, the 69th Annual Pennsylvania Bituminous Coal Queen Pageant will be held at 7 p.m. at Carmichaels High School. Eleven young women from school districts in the area will compete for the crown.

From Tuesday through Saturday, a carnival and other entertainment will be offered at the VFD from 7 to 10 p.m.

Fox said the week’s highlights include two unique parades: a pet parade on Wednesday and decorated bicycle parade on Thursday.

“You can bring any pet you want. In the past, the kids have brought fish, lizards and snakes, and they can walk them or roll them if necessary,” she noted.

Participants in both parades will gather at Yoskovich Funeral Home prior to their 6 p.m. start.

The week rounds out on Saturday, Aug. 24 with an auto and motorcycle show at Wana B Park, and the King Coal Parade at 4 p.m.

“The parade is our biggest event. After that, the carnival will be open … and we’ll close at 10 p.m. with the annual fireworks,” Fox said.

Many events throughout the week are free; however, proceeds from those that require a fee go toward a good cause.

“Any funds raised throughout the week go back to the three main organization members,” Fox said, referring to Carmichaels Lions Club, Carmichaels & Cumberland Township VFD and Carmichaels Chamber of Commerce.

“We put the funds back into these organizations who serve our community throughout the entire year,” Fox said.
